Extreme Animals returns this week for teens on July 17

The second half of the Stillwater Public Library’s 2024 summer reading program still has plenty of fun and adventure in store for all ages! This week, kids will enjoy a dog adventure featuring time travel and tricks, teens will learn about some animal friends and adults will solve a murder mystery. Readers can continue to record their reading points on Beanstack until Saturday, July 27.

Children will experience an exciting voyage starring some furry friends on Tuesday, July 16, when Denise Gard’s famous border collies, Joey and Kira, discover a book on Ancient Egypt. The two friends dream about traveling back in time to explore the pyramids, but when Kira angers the goddess Bastet, Joey must find a way to remove the curse before Kira becomes a beetle! This show is best suited for children going into kindergarten through fifth grade and will take place at 10 a.m. and repeat at 2 p.m. The doors will close if capacity is reached.

The adventures continue Wednesday, July 17, at 2 p.m., as teens in grades 6-12 experience “Extreme Animals,” an educational presentation of exotic animals from around the world for animal lovers featuring bearded dragons, chinchillas, lemurs, pythons, a baby kangaroo and more.

Then on Thursday, July 18, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., families are invited to attend another week of "Summer Cinema." This week’s PG-rated film (100 minutes) tells the story of a beautiful girl locked in a tower with magical golden hair. When the kingdom’s most wanted charming bandit hides in a mysterious tower, he meets a spirited teen with an unlikely superpower: 70 feet of magical golden hair! Together, the unlikely duo sets off on a fantastic journey filled with surprising heroes, laughter and suspense. An adult must supervise children during the movie.

The week wraps up on Friday, July 19, with “Murder at the Castle” for adults. The murder mystery program is currently full; however, individuals are welcome to get on the waiting list at tinyurl.com/SPLMurderMystery. Library staff will contact names off the list if spaces open up.

Adult Services Librarian Brenna Gilchrist is pleased that there are so many people eager to attend the event.

“I highly encourage anyone interested in this program to go ahead and get on the waiting list,” Gilchrist said. “If there is enough demand, I will try to have a repeat.”
