The Stillwater Electric Utility (SEU), the City’s electric department, earned the Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma, Inc. (MESO) first-place award in the annual Electric Operations and Reliability Competition, for the second year in a row, and a first-place award for safety.

â€śThe electric utility is fortunate to have a team of experts who are dedicated to making safety their No. 1 priority and who also stand guard 24 hours a day to ensure that our customers’ electricity needs are met,” Electric Utility Director Loren Smith said. “Reliability encompasses several aspects, one of which is responsiveness to outages in real time. Another is the behind-the-scenes continuous maintenance and improvement of the electric system. We are fortunate to have the support of our board of trustees and the City Manager’s office in all our endeavors, making these awards a win-win for the entire city team and the community we serve. We are your proud public power provider.”

SEU delivered an Average System Availability Index of 99.99 percent in 2023, earning Outstanding Achievement recognition in the category for cities with a population of more than 10,000. In addition, Stillwater Electric Utility received a first-place award for its commitment to safety, as SEU personnel worked 118,223 hours in 2023 with no reportable incidents and no lost work time.

“Stillwater Electric Utility’s outstanding performance in both reliability and safety is a model for excellence in the electric utility sector,” MESO General Manager Cheryl Adams said. “We are proud to recognize SEU for setting a high standard in our industry.”

â€śSuccess is measured by continuing to be prepared to perform each aspect of the job safely and precisely,” Adams said. “This is aided by electric utilities providing proper training, keeping accurate records, having an action plan for emergencies, and modeling safe workplace practices. SEU’s success is a true testament to the hard work they’ve put into ensuring reliable and safe services for the Stillwater community.”

â€śWe are grateful for SEU’s commitment to excellence in all aspects of the service they provide our community,” City Manager Brady Moore said. “This dedication to excellence is evident in the reliability of our electric utility and the high-level of service they deliver daily to our customers.”

MESO is a municipal utility trade association representing cities that own a locally controlled electric utility, generally referred to as “public power.” The association’s member utilities provide electric services and power generation to approximately 750,000 people in Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas.

MESO’s mission is to enhance its members’ value to their customers through industry best-practice programs, training and services. The organization serves municipal professionals through safety, job training and professional development programs, believing in building strong communities through a well-trained workforce.
