Sci-fi film club launches new season with classic TV series screenings

The Stillwater Public Library’s (SPL) long-running science fiction film club will kick off a new series in October featuring various iterations of “Star Trek.” Attendees will screen the first episodes of four different shows on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m., starting on Oct. 17.

Since its inception in 2014, the Sci-Fi Film Club has been meeting at the library to watch old and new science fiction films. Genres shown have ranged from time travel to creature features. This series takes a different approach by highlighting a TV series.

Each program in the series will usually include a screening of the first episode of each show, followed by a group discussion led by SPL librarians.

The full schedule for this series includes:

  • Oct. 17: “Star Trek” – “Star Trek” – The original starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley and many more.
  • Nov. 21: “Star Trek: Next Generation” – In the first spin-off of the classic show, Captain Jean-Luc Picard continues to explore the vast galaxy, encountering new alien life and threats to the Federation.
  • Dec. 19: “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” – Taking place on a future space station, Commander Benjamin Sisko (played by Avery Brooks) and his crew must journey vast distances in short periods of time while fighting off rival alien species.
  • Jan. 16: “Star Trek: Voyager “– Led by a new captain (portrayed by Kate Mulgrew), a starship and its crew are stranded in an uncharted galaxy. The crew encounters different species as they attempt to find their way home.

Popcorn and soft drinks will be provided by the Friends of the Stillwater Public Library. Attendees may bring snacks to share with the group.

To register, visit the library’s website at stillwaterok.gov/LibraryRegister, stop by or call the Help Desk at (405) 372-3633 x8106 or email askalibrarian@stillwaterok.gov. Registration is requested so new attendees can join the email list and receive reminder messages before each meeting.
