Autumn is a magical time in Oklahoma. Crisp, cool mornings, sunny days and pleasant evening temperatures entice residents to spend time outdoors. Following the hot summer months, this respite is welcomed. And, it won’t be long until the vibrant red, yellow and orange colors appear in the trees. The colors of fall will be on display typically from mid-October to early November.

Do you know why the leaves change color in the fall? The green in the leaves is chlorophyll, which is responsible for catching the sun’s energy and turning it into energy for plant growth. During the warm summer months, the chlorophyll is high and masks the other pigments in the leaf. When the weather cools off, the level of chlorophyll diminishes, allowing the other pigments to shine.

The trees that show off the most this time of year are maples with their bright reds and oranges; oaks with golden yellow and deep brown colors; sumac with vibrant reds; cottonwoods featuring yellow hues; sweetgums with a mix of yellow, orange, red and purple; and hickories boasting a soft, golden yellow.

Several factors influence the fall colors. A wet summer followed by a dry, cool fall usually leads to a spectacular display of color. An early frost can also speed up the color change. Colors can be muted by either too much rainfall or drought conditions. Although Oklahoma is experiencing cooler weather at night, which promotes the breakdown of chlorophyll, the extended forecast remains pretty dry. This means the fall colors in Oklahoma will likely be more muted.

One of Oklahoma’s most renowned fall foliage drives is the Talimena National Scenic Byway that runs through the Ouachita National Forest in southeastern Oklahoma. Other options around the state include the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge, Robbers Cave State Park, Roman Nose State Park, Great Salt Plains State Park, Chickasaw National Recreation Area and Boiling Springs State Park.

In conjunction with the leaves changing colors, many places across the state feature fall festivals. A quick online search can help families find activities near them. Load the family in the car and head out to enjoy some great fall colors, fun activities and time together.
